President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda has been re-elected as Chairman of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party, as he prepares to run again in the upcoming 2026 presidential elections.
In his speech delivered in Kampala after being confirmed as the candidate, Museveni outlined six key priorities for his next six-year term: peace, development, wealth, jobs, services, and markets. He emphasized that these are essential to ensuring Uganda — and Africa at large — do not remain behind as they have historically.
He stated:
“I am here to further explain to Ugandans the importance of these six things. Peace is not just the absence of war; it also means fighting crime. Development is roads, electricity, schools, and more. Wealth must reach every household, jobs must be created, services improved, and markets expanded.”
Museveni said another reason he is running again is to mentor leaders who will help move Uganda from its current developing country status (with a GDP of $66 billion) to an advanced economy with a GDP of $500 billion in the coming years.
He also emphasized the importance of adding value to Uganda’s natural resources to increase national revenue and employment opportunities.
“What we must do is process what we have: gold, copper, coffee, legumes, and more, instead of exporting raw materials. That’s how we bring industries here and grow our economy,” he added.
