Two people were shot in the Nyungwe forest area, specifically in Ntendezi Cell, Ruharambuga Sector in Nyamasheke District—one of them died, and the other was injured.
Rwanda National Police explained that the two were part of a group of about 15 people who entered Nyungwe Forest armed with dogs and traditional weapons, suspected of attempting illegal mining activities.
The police posted on their official X (formerly Twitter) page:
“Last night around 4:30 AM, 15 individuals armed with traditional weapons and dogs entered Nyungwe Forest, suspected of engaging in illegal mining activities.”
It continued:
“When they were stopped by forest patrol guards, they refused to comply and instead surrounded and attacked them. That’s when two individuals were shot, and the others fled.”
According to the Police, the injured individuals were taken to Bushenge Hospital, but one of them later succumbed to his injuries.
The police expressed condolences to the bereaved family and added that an investigation into the incident has begun.
