Rubavu: Suspected Drug Dealers Caught with 2,000 Rolls of Cannabis

Two men suspected of trafficking narcotics (cannabis) smuggled from the Democratic Republic of Congo were arrested in Rubavu District with 2,000 rolls of cannabis.

Murengezi Fanuel, known as Kabwana Dada, aged 22, and Nizeyimana Theogene, aged 31, were apprehended on Saturday, February 22, 2025, around 3:30 PM in Nyundo Sector, Terimbere Cell, Terimbere Village.

The Western Province Police Spokesperson, SP Karekezi Twizere Bonaventure, confirmed the incident to BWIZA, emphasizing that fighting drug trafficking is everyone’s responsibility.

He stated, “The Police Anti-Smuggling and Crime Unit arrested two men suspected of drug trafficking with 2,000 rolls of cannabis, which they smuggled into Rwanda from the DRC.”

He further explained that narcotics pose a significant threat to public safety as they can lead to violence, theft, and other crimes.

He urged citizens to actively participate in the fight against drugs, stressing that it is everyone’s duty to ensure national security.

“Security is something we all must work for, and every Rwandan has the responsibility to safeguard it by reporting suspicious activities and staying away from anything related to narcotics,” he added.

The suspects were handed over to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) at the Gisenyi station.

Article 263 of Law nº68/2018 of August 30, 2018, on criminal offenses and penalties, stipulates that anyone who produces, cultivates, transforms, transports, stores, distributes, or sells narcotics or similar substances illegally commits a crime.

If found guilty, the offender faces life imprisonment and a fine ranging from twenty million (20,000,000 RWF) to thirty million Rwandan francs (30,000,000 RWF) for trafficking high-level narcotics.

Murengezi Fanuel, known as Kabwana Dada, and Nizeyimana Theogene are accused of trafficking cannabis and were caught with 2,000 rolls.
