Tanzania’s Ambassador to Cuba, Humphrey Hesron Polepole, has submitted his resignation letter to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, stepping down from his government and diplomatic duties due to deep concerns about the direction in which the country is heading.

In an open letter, Polepole stated that his decision was based on deep reflection and his observation of how Tanzania’s leadership is failing to uphold human rights, witnessing the erosion of governance values, and a lack of commitment to solving citizens’ problems.

He wrote:

“I was honored to be entrusted with representing the country, but I can no longer stand behind agendas that no longer uphold the dignity of our nation or that betray the fundamental principles of leadership and the philosophy of humanity.”

He added:

“It has been deeply saddening to witness the steady decline in justice, peace, and citizens’ rights. The core pillars that should define our nation are steadily collapsing.”

Polepole also criticized the poor conduct of internal elections within the ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), saying that decisions and ideas are being manipulated in ways that contradict the party’s values and freedom. He noted that this derailed the party’s path toward restoring public trust ahead of future elections.

Polepole had served as Ambassador to Havana for two years, after previously holding the position of Ambassador to Malawi (2022–2023), and serving as a Member of Parliament in Tanzania’s National Assembly (2020–2022).
