On May 2, 2025, M23 rebels, affiliated with the Congo River Alliance (AFC), captured the town of Lunyasenge in the Musindi groupement of North Kivu province, Democratic Republic of the Congo. The town, situated on the western shores of Lake Edward, was overtaken following clashes with the Congolese army (FARDC), resulting in 17 fatalities, including seven soldiers.

In a statement released on Sunday, the FARDC’s Sukola I operations command in Grand Nord condemned the attack as a blatant violation of the ceasefire and the agreements established during the Doha peace talks.

The FARDC emphasized its right to retaliate against any further acts of aggression by M23, asserting its commitment to restoring peace and security in the region.
