The former stronghold of the FDLR, along with the Mai-Mai UPLC militias of Kambale-Mayani and Mazembe, near Lake Edward in Lunyasenge, Lubero Territory in North Kivu, has been overrun by AFC/M23 fighters, who are now reportedly heading toward Ituri.
These bases, destroyed on Sunday, were mainly used by FDLR rebels who had relocated from Nyanzale through Rwindi to Lubero, reportedly brought by FARDC General Chiko Tshitambwe, according to information from the region relayed to BWIZA.
Following their takeover of Lunyasenge, reports indicate that on Monday, M23 fighters captured the villages of Katundu and Musenda, still within Lubero Territory.
As the situation develops, it’s further reported that AFC/M23 forces are now moving toward Beni Territory, which lies within Ituri Province.
