Three members of the same family were shot dead in Goma, North Kivu province, over the weekend. According to reports, the attack occurred around 12:30 AM on Saturday, May 3, when assailants stormed the home of Murihano David. One intruder entered the compound, opened fire, and then let his accomplices in.
Upon hearing the commotion, a child in the house raised an alarm. The attackers shot Murihano David in the chest, killing him instantly. His eldest son attempted to intervene but was also shot during a struggle with the assailants. A visiting relative from Rwanda, who came downstairs amidst the chaos, was shot in the head and died on the spot.
Family members believe the attack was premeditated, as the victims had received threats prior to the incident. The killings have deeply affected the Banyamulenge community in Goma.
Goma continues to experience insecurity and violence, exacerbated by the proliferation of weapons and the presence of various armed groups, including the Wazalendo and FDLR militias. The situation has deteriorated since January, when government forces abandoned their positions, leaving behind a cache of weapons that fell into the hands of rebel groups.
