About 30 trucks loaded with military equipment belonging to SADC troops deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo passed through Rwanda on Sunday, May 11, as part of a withdrawal operation.

The convoy departed from Rubavu, heading to Rusumo in Kirehe District, before continuing to Chato, Tanzania.

As usual, the trucks were escorted by Rwandan police and military forces.

This fourth batch brings the total number of SADC military trucks that have crossed Rwanda since the start of the withdrawal to approximately 120.

The previous three phases involved around 90 trucks and 37 soldiers.

SADC had deployed troops from South Africa, Malawi, and Tanzania to the DRC in late 2023 to support the Congolese government in its conflict with the M23 rebel group.

However, after suffering military defeats in Goma earlier this year, SADC decided to withdraw its troops through Rwanda. M23 has since taken control of Goma, a key city and capital of North Kivu province.
