Kazakhstan Seals Major Deal to Buy Rwanda’s Beryllium for Nuclear Industry

On May 29, 2025, Kazakhstan’s state-owned Samruk-Kazyna National Welfare Fund signed a partnership agreement with Rwanda’s national agency in charge of Minerals, Petroleum, and Gas (RMB), allowing Kazakhstan to begin purchasing Beryllium from Rwanda. The deal was announced in an official statement by Samruk-Kazyna and marks a significant step in boosting trade between the two nations.

Beryllium is a lightweight yet strong chemical element that withstands high temperatures, making it valuable in the aerospace, defense, nuclear energy, and medical technology industries. It is used in X-ray machine components, medical devices, and high-tech equipment.

The agreement involves cooperation with Kazatomprom, Kazakhstan’s state nuclear corporation and the world’s leading uranium producer. Kazatomprom plans to use Rwandan Beryllium in its nuclear projects, signaling strong international confidence in the mineral’s quality and value.

On May 28, 2025, Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev held high-level talks with Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, who was visiting Kazakhstan. Discussions focused on exporting Kazakhstan’s agricultural products to African markets, space research projects, digitalization, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity.

Rwanda also expressed keen interest in collaborating with Kazakhstan in energy production, mining, mineral trade, and research and development.

This partnership highlights Rwanda’s growing presence in the global mineral market. The agreement is expected to boost mining capacity, increase production, and create new employment opportunities for local Rwandan miners.
