Rwanda and Qatar Deepen Ties: Foreign Ministers Discuss Security, Aviation, and Visa-Free Travel

On Sunday, June 1, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, held talks with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, during his official working visit to the Middle Eastern nation.

According to a statement released by Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two ministers discussed ways to strengthen the partnership between their countries.

The statement reads: “Both sides discussed the bilateral cooperation between their countries and how to enhance and support it.”

Qatar is also actively involved in efforts to restore peace in Eastern DR Congo by facilitating dialogue between concerned parties, including Rwanda and the DRC. This issue was on the agenda during their meeting, with talks still ongoing.

Qatar noted: “They also discussed efforts to resolve the conflict between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, along with other topics of mutual interest.”

The diplomatic partnership reflects a long-standing, high-level cooperation between the two nations in sectors including aviation, military and security, and information and communication technology (ICT).

Qatar Airways has invested in the construction of the $2 billion Bugesera International Airport in Rwanda, which is expected to be completed in 2028.

On February 12, President Kagame met with Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, in Doha.

Qatar recently approved a bilateral agreement allowing visa-free entry for ordinary passport holders from both countries.

This agreement was ratified on February 12. Previously, Rwandan citizens could enter Qatar visa-free for up to 30 days.
