On June 2, 1994, during the peak of the Genocide against the Tutsi, the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) rescued thousands of people who were about to be massacred.

This was confirmed by the Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement, Dr. Jean Damascène Bizimana, in a post on X (formerly Twitter) as Rwandans continue the 100-day commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Minister Dr. Bizimana stated:
“June 2, 1994, is a day that remains unforgettable for many. The RPF INKOTANYI forces rescued thousands of Tutsis who were on the brink of extermination by Interahamwe militias, the Impuzamugambi, and ex-FAR soldiers in Kabgayi.”

He added:
“It was the only site where the largest number of Tutsis were rescued at once, even though many others were killed along the road to Kabgayi, especially at the roadblock near Shingiro Mbonyumutwa’s residence in Gitarama. Many Tutsis were also taken from the Kabgayi camp and executed, while others were thrown into the Nyabarongo River after being transported in government buses.”

Minister Dr. Bizimana concluded his message by thanking the RPF Inkotanyi forces for saving many Rwandans who would have otherwise perished if not for their intervention.

He said:
“Rwandan Inkotanyi, thank you for rescuing and saving Rwanda. Now, 31 years later, Rwanda has become a country of hope and dignity for Rwandans. Let’s continue to protect our unity and fight genocide ideology. Let those who distort our history not define us.”

The 100-day commemoration will end in July, the month in which the RPF ended the Genocide against the Tutsi across the entire country.
