Two weeks after being placed on forced retirement by decree of Burundi’s President Evariste Ndayishimiye, Prime Minister Gervais Ndirakobuca has reappeared in public wearing the CNDD-FDD ruling party’s attire at a campaign rally in Bujumbura province—stirring widespread speculation ahead of the June 2025 parliamentary elections.
This marks his first public appearance since the retirement decision, held at the Paroisse de Cibitoke stadium in Bujumbura, and it has fueled intense debate about his political future.
His wearing of CNDD-FDD gear was seen as a bold move, especially given the election season. Burundi political analysts noted that clarity may emerge soon.
One such analyst commented:
“Let’s wait for June 7, 2025, when candidate lists for the Senate will be announced. There’s a real possibility he’ll secure a Senate candidacy.”
President Ndayishimiye issued the retirement order on May 10, 2025, surprising both citizens and political observers.
Many now wonder whether the retirement was politically motivated, given its timing ahead of June’s parliamentary elections.
June 7 is the scheduled date for publishing approved candidate lists, which could shed light on Gervais Ndirakobuca’s political roadmap and his role in the 2025 general elections.
