Reports circulating in the Democratic Republic of Congo indicate that a coup d’état planned by General Christian Tshiwewe Songesa has been thwarted.
General Tshiwewe is President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi’s senior military advisor. He previously served as the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces of the DRC and also led the presidential guard responsible for protecting Tshisekedi.
According to available information, on the evening of Wednesday, July 9, General Tshiwewe was placed under house arrest, with heavily armed soldiers surrounding his residence.
Neither the DRC Government nor the military has issued an official statement regarding these developments. However, it is reported that the general was detained at home after the National Security Council uncovered and thwarted his plot to overthrow the government.
Sources further indicate that shortly before his arrest, two other high-ranking officers close to him were also arrested.
These include:
-
General-Major Maurice, formerly his chief of staff
-
Lieutenant-Colonel Adelart Mwiza, who previously served as his senior advisor.
