Four Rwandan teenagers have been arrested in Rukungiri District, Uganda, over the murder of a 19-year-old woman, allegedly sparked by an argument about a matchstick.
Elly Maate, the Police Spokesperson for the Kigezi Region, confirmed the incident, identifying the victim as Diana Wase, aged 19. She was reportedly killed on Friday night in Nyarushanje Village, Ibanda Parish, Nyarushanje Sub-County, Rukungiri District.
The suspects have been named as:
-
Irakoze Joyeuse (18)
-
Mutesi Zane (17)
-
Muhawenimana Claudine (19)
-
Umutoniwase Pascaline (19)
All of them are believed to be bar workers from Rwanda, according to Chimpreports.
According to Maate, on Friday night the suspects and the deceased were working at a bar owned by someone named Kashaija. Later in the night, they asked Wase for a matchstick to light a cigarette. Instead of giving it to them, she became angry, leading to a physical altercation during which she was struck in the neck and collapsed.
She was rushed to St. Andrew’s Health Centre in Nyarushanje and later transferred to Kisizi Hospital, where she was declared dead.
Police at Rubabo Station were informed, the suspects were arrested, and investigations are underway. Upon completion, they will be prosecuted in court.
