In the city of Kigali, the Eastern Africa Greens Congress (EAGF) has officially opened its meeting at Hotel Olympic Kimironko, bringing together delegates from Green political parties across the East African region.
The meeting began on 8 May 2026 and is scheduled to conclude today, on 9 May 2026. It brings together representatives from several countries, including Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Somalia, and Ethiopia.
Participants include leaders and representatives of Green parties in the region, each country being represented by delegates holding various responsibilities within their respective political and environmental organizations.
Uganda is represented by Mr. Charles Bbaale, who represents the Ecological Party of Uganda and serves as the Vice President of the EAGF. He is joined by Ms. Sharon Katuura, the Executive Director of the EAGF, who is responsible for coordinating the federation’s regional activities.
Kenya is represented by Ms. Lucie Kagendo Mbae, who represents the Green Congress of Kenya and also serves internationally as the Secretary of Global Greens, where she contributes to global coordination among Green parties.
Burundi is on another hand represented by Mr. Beyle Guy MUKUNZI, who represents the Burundi Green Movement and serves as the Treasurer of the EAGF, overseeing the federation’s financial and administrative matters, while Somalia is represented by Hon. Minister Said Mohamed Mohamoud, the Secretary General of the Somalia Green Party, who represents his country in advancing Green politics and environmental protection initiatives.
The congress was officially opened by the President of the Eastern Africa Greens Federation (EAGF), Dr Frank Habineza, who also leads the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda (DGPR). He emphasized that the meeting aims to strengthen cooperation among Green parties in the region.
Discussions during the congress focus on strengthening collaboration among Green parties, environmental protection and climate change response, sustainable agriculture, capacity building for Green parties in political engagement, and harmonizing national policies for biodiversity conservation.
The EAGF congress is expected to produce joint strategies aimed at reinforcing regional cooperation and promoting sustainable development based on environmental protection principles.
