A prominent economist from Burundi, André Nikwigize, warns that unless urgent action is taken, Burundi is heading toward total collapse due to its deteriorating economic situation.
According to Nikwigize, the country is collapsing because the government has continuously ignored expert advice from economists who have repeatedly raised concerns about the nation’s economy, which has largely been monopolized by a few individuals.
This economist points out that Burundi has significantly regressed during the 5-year term of President Évariste Ndayishimiye, as the country has been overrun by thieves and greedy individuals who only care about enriching themselves, not the interests of the citizens.
He explains that one of the major causes of this regression is the decline in agricultural production. This was due to the government’s failure to provide fertilizers on time, quality seeds, and adequate support to institutions working in the agriculture sector.
This situation has led to a 40% drop in agricultural yield, pushing a large portion of the Burundian population into poverty and hunger. Currently, 75% of Burundians live in extreme poverty, and nearly 6 million people, about half of the population, are poor.
Six out of ten children suffer from malnutrition due to a lack of adequate food, according to international organizations and various experts. Yet, no one is stepping in to advocate or protect them.
Due to embezzlement of state resources and lack of punishment for those responsible, Burundi lacks modern roads, clean water, electricity, and its mineral resources and coffee are being sold off, but the money simply vanishes.
André Nikwigize is raising the alarm, calling on the international community to take notice before the situation completely collapses, emphasizing that the Burundian government has consistently ignored the economic advice it has received.
