Kenyan police are interrogating three people following an incident where a man threw a shoe at President William Ruto in Kuria West, Migori County.
This happened while President Ruto was delivering a speech to residents of Kehancha on Sunday, May 4, 2025.
Police stated that investigations are ongoing, and other suspects are still being pursued.
Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Internal Security, Kipchumba Murkomen, announced that the three individuals were detained for thorough questioning to determine whether this was an isolated act or a deliberate attempt to endanger the president’s security.
Preliminary investigations suggest the incident may have had political motives and could have been premeditated ahead of the president’s visit.
Several Kenyan media outlets reported that the incident briefly disrupted the president’s speech during his tour in Migori.

A five-second video clip circulating online captures the moment someone in the crowd hurled a shoe toward Ruto’s head while he was addressing the public.
President Ruto tried to deflect the shoe as it approached him.
His security team immediately rushed onto the stage, and the meeting was halted for a few minutes.
Security officers quickly began dispersing people near the scene, even as the president urged them to stop.
