Two women married to the same man were rushed to the hospital in Dakwa, Bwari Area Council, Abuja, after consuming a traditional aphrodisiac known as “kayan mata” in an attempt to impress their husband, who had recently married a third wife.

According to Daily Trust, the two wives took the substance three days after their husband, Musa Muhammad, married a new wife from Gusau, in Zamfara State. It is reported that although they usually took the herbal aphrodisiac with milk or sugar, this time it was given to them in powder form, which was unusual.

Musa explained that he was called from his new wife’s home and informed that his two wives were unwell. When he arrived, he found them screaming and crying in pain from abdominal cramps. After failed attempts to treat them at home with the help of a nurse, they were taken to Madalla General Hospital, where they underwent surgery for internal damage.

The women remained in hospital for a week and were discharged on Monday. Reports suggest they regularly used the aphrodisiac from a female herbalist, but this time, the method of intake was different.

Dr. Taiye Anifowose, a gynecologist, issued a warning urging women to avoid such traditional herbs, as they can damage reproductive organs and lead to long-term health complications.
