Kasaza village in Fizi Territory (South Kivu) was struck by devastating rainfall on the night of Thursday, May 8 to Friday, May 9, 2025, claiming the lives of over 100 people.
The death toll and damage continue to rise. According to the Territory Administrator, Samy Kalonji, more than 110 bodies have been recovered, over 40 people were injured, 150 houses destroyed, and at least 850 residents are now homeless.
As reported by mediacongo.net, rescue efforts are still ongoing using bare hands, raising fears that the death toll may increase further in the coming days.
To address this tragedy, Samy Kalonji made a heartfelt appeal:
“We ask the national and provincial governments to help us bury our brothers and sisters with dignity. Many bodies are still lying on the ground. We need coffins and burial support.”
He also called on humanitarian organizations to intervene, as many families are spending nights outdoors without shelter, food, or medical aid.
