Rwandan music sensation Bwiza Emerance, currently one of the most popular artists in the country, has shared her surprise after visiting the city of Goma, the capital of North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), which is currently under the control of the AFC/M23 armed group.
In a message posted on her social media platforms, Bwiza revealed that she had traveled to Goma from Rubavu. During the trip, those accompanying her kept talking about how much the city had changed.
In videos she shared, she is seen walking through the city, showing its notable cleanliness and calm atmosphere.
She stated: “What surprised me most is how peaceful and clean the city is.”
She added that she had previously heard stories portraying Goma as a city full of theft and dirt, but was shocked by how much it had improved.
Locals in Goma also say that since the AFC/M23 took control of the city, life has changed significantly. People feel safer, businesses are functioning normally, and the number of visitors from various regions has increased.
Bwiza’s remarks come amid growing discussions about the role of armed groups in transforming the socio-political environment in eastern DRC.
