Project background:
Association des Veuves du Genocide Agahozo is a nonprofit organization established in January 1995 in the aftermath of the Genocide perpetrated against the Tutsis in Rwanda.
Our mission is to foster social justice for vulnerable women, children and families through improving their health, socio-economic welfare, enhancing gender parity and justice, thereby transforming and rebuilding their lives..
Under the Support of LAF, AVEGA is implementing a project entitled “Elderly Widows Legal Assistance Project-Tubasindagize (EWLAP Tubasindagize) with the aim of supporting elderly childless Genocide widows to enjoy their property and succession rights, have access to proxy management rights, and legal representation in property succession cases across different Districts of Rwanda.
It is in this context; AVEGA would like to recruit one, qualified and experienced project coordinator/legal officer who will be responsible for the day to day implementation of the activities of the project in the working areas.
Roles and Responsibilities:
Mapping and identifying childless widows/ers who need legal aid in the preparation and authentication of their wills/testaments.
Providing legal support to childless widows/ers to prepare their wills/last testaments.
Draft and writing up legal documents like legal briefs, wills, proxy management documents, property management documents and mediation minutes.
Providing accurate, timely and effective legal advice to widows/ers.
Represent the organization in different meetings related to human rights and legal aid.
Advising widows/ers beneficiaries on their legal rights and obligations.
Organize and conduct trainings for paralegals
Maintain contacts with the paralegals.
Involved in advocacy before different institutions.
Referral of cases to respective institutions
Produce a periodic report on the project implementations.
Required Qualifications and Skills
A Bachelor’s degree in law
2 years of experience working in the human rights domain and must have a clear understanding of the property and succession law.
Ability to work without close supervision, i.e, must have initiatives, strong decision making, problem solving and analytical thinking skills and abilities to exercise independent judgment.
Excellent communication skills with a demonstrated commitment to participatory approaches.
Ability to handle multi-task and prioritize work in relation to needs and urgency and meet a tight deadline
Experienced in delivering trainings on legal issues
Experience in contract negotiation and drafting
Strong presentation, communication, and report writing skills.
Computer skills: word processing, spreadsheets, presentations.
Fluency in written and spoken English
