Ukrainian media has reported that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine has rejected a Russian proposal for a three-day ceasefire, dismissing it as a theatrical ploy and instead calling for a one-month truce.
Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Zelenskyy said:
“A ceasefire without conditions is the standard set by the Americans. We are following that example. It could begin on that proposed date or another — preferably earlier. Yes, let’s attempt 30 days. Why a 30-day ceasefire? Because it’s impossible to reach any meaningful agreement in three, five, or even seven days.”
The Russian President, Vladimir Putin, had proposed a temporary suspension of fighting from May 7th to May 9th, coinciding with Russia’s annual Victory Day celebrations in Moscow, where international delegates are traditionally invited.
However, President Zelenskyy made it clear that he cannot guarantee the safety of those attending Moscow’s military parade commemorating World War II Victory Day during that period.
