A 41-year-old man from Bugesera District ambushed his 38-year-old wife as she returned from farming, cut her neck with a machete and killed her. He then mutilated his own genitals and cut his neck. He was taken to hospital but later died. The incident occurred on Wednesday, the 21st, in Kigina Village, Nemba Cell, Rweru Sector, Bugesera District.
The Rwanda National Police spokesperson for the Eastern Province, SSP Twizeyimana Hamduni, told the local online newspaper that the couple had been living together in an informal union for one year.
He said the man ambushed the woman as she returned from farming and attacked her with a machete.
He said: “The woman and the man were living together in an informal union and had been together for one year. They had separated a few days earlier. Yesterday, the man ambushed the woman as she returned from farming, attacked her with a machete and killed her. He then used the same machete to injure his own genitals and neck. When the police arrived, they first rushed him to Nyamata Hospital, where he died.”
SSP Twizeyimana added that the man had inflicted injuries on his own genitals and neck.
He explained that the couple had been experiencing conflicts for some time and urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands. Instead, he encouraged them to seek assistance from security agencies and local authorities to help resolve their disputes.
The bodies have been taken to Nyamata Hospital. Residents have also been urged to report families experiencing domestic conflicts so that they can receive assistance before the situation escalates.
