Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has congratulated Rwandan President Paul Kagame and Rwanda for bringing Formula 1 back to the African continent after a 33-year absence.

In a message posted on X, Gen. Muhoozi wrote: “I want to congratulate H.E. Paul Kagame and Rwanda for the return of Formula 1 to the African continent after 33 years. Hongera sana.”

Gen. Muhoozi’s message adds to a growing list of African leaders who have congratulated Rwanda and President Kagame following the announcement that the country will host a Formula 1 Grand Prix.

They include South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema, who have also welcomed the development.

Rwanda announced on October 13, 2026, that it had reached a 10-year agreement with Formula 1 to bring the championship back to Africa, with the first race expected in the early 2030s.

The proposed Grand Prix will take place on a purpose-built circuit in Bugesera, near the under-construction Bugesera International Airport.

Formula 1 last held a race on African soil in 1993, at the Kyalami circuit in South Africa. Rwanda’s planned return to the calendar is expected to strengthen the country’s international profile and create opportunities in tourism, investment, infrastructure development and employment.

The project also forms part of Rwanda’s broader strategy to attract major international sporting events and position the country as a destination for global competitions.

Gen. Muhoozi’s message highlights the regional attention surrounding Rwanda’s Formula 1 ambitions, as African leaders welcome the prospect of the continent returning to one of the world’s most prominent motorsport championships.
