The Ibuka organization, which advocates for the rights of survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, has called for a comprehensive investigation into the murder of Theresie Nyirangirinshuti, a genocide survivor from the Shangi Sector in Nyamasheke District. Nyirangirinshuti was brutally killed on the night of May 16, 2025, by unknown assailants.
In a statement, Ibuka condemned the act as a heinous crime targeting genocide survivors and urged authorities to conduct an in-depth investigation to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The organization emphasized the importance of protecting survivors from such attacks, noting that continued violence against them undermines efforts toward national unity and reconciliation.
According to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB), between 2019 and 2023, there were 2,660 recorded cases related to genocide ideology and associated crimes, with 50% of these targeting genocide survivors. During the 31st commemoration week of the genocide, RIB registered 82 cases related to genocide ideology, 36 of which involved violence against survivors.
Ibuka has called on all individuals harboring genocidal ideologies to abandon such thoughts and for the community to remain vigilant in safeguarding the lives and dignity of survivors.
