South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has congratulated Rwanda and President Paul Kagame after the country secured a 10-year agreement to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix, following competition between the two countries to stage the prestigious motorsport event.

In a message shared on his official X account, Ramaphosa said South Africa shared in Rwanda’s pride as the country prepares to bring Formula 1 back to African soil at a planned circuit in Bugesera from the early 2030s.

“On behalf of the government and people of South Africa, I offer warm congratulations to His Excellency President Paul Kagame and the government and people of Rwanda on securing a 10-year agreement to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix,” Ramaphosa wrote.

He described the agreement as recognition of Rwanda’s capabilities and those of the African continent more broadly, highlighting the significance of hosting an internationally renowned sporting competition.

Ramaphosa also recalled South Africa’s history with Formula 1, noting that his country hosted the first Grand Prix on African soil in 1993 and has organised other major international events.

He said South Africa would be willing to offer support to Rwanda if requested, signalling a readiness to cooperate in preparations for the competition.

The South African leader further described the Formula 1 African Grand Prix as another major addition to Rwanda’s growing portfolio of international sporting events, which includes the Tour du Rwanda cycling race.

“Congratulations, Rwanda. You are in pole position to make all of Africa proud and take motorsport to new heights,” he added.

Rwanda’s agreement to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix marks a significant step in the country’s efforts to attract major international sporting events and strengthen its profile as a destination for tourism and investment.

The race is planned for a circuit in Bugesera, with the event expected to take place from the early 2030s. The exact date of the first race has not yet been announced.
