This Thursday, Rwanda and the UK have signed the Rwanda-UK Migration and Economic Development Partnership, under which some people seeking refugee protection in Britain will be transferred to Rwanda.
During the Press Conference on the UK-Rwanda Migration and Economic Development Partnership, Rwanda’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dr Vincent Biruta said Rwanda is ready.
“In relation to the infrastructure aspect of the programme; when we were discussing this partnership, we assessed our capacity to receive immigrants, & we know that we have the capacity in place to host immigrants but we’re also investing in new infrastructure” -Minister Biruta assured
“Rwanda has a very unique history in terms of refugees and resettlement in particular. First and foremost, Rwanda is a safe and secure country with respect for the Rule of Law.” – The UK Home Secretary, Priti Patel said
“Rwanda is totally transformed over the last few decades. It is a very different country from what it was and […] we have a very high degree of confidence in the way people will be received in Rwanda.” – UK Prime Minister
Boris Johnson on the Rwanda-UK migration deal
It is expected a yet to know number of immigrants will be sent to Rwanda. In UK, some non-governmental bodies are objecting the decision citing it is dangerous among other reasons.
