The Rwanda Meteorology Agency, Meteo Rwanda, warned that above-average rainfall is expected across the country in October 2026.

In its weather forecast bulletin released on 5 October 2026, the agency indicated that rainfall this month is expected to range between 90 and 300 millimetres, which is above the average amount normally received in October.

Meteo Rwanda also forecast that daytime temperatures will range between 20 and 31 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures are expected to range between 9 and 19 degrees Celsius.

Moderate winds are also expected during the month, occasionally becoming strong, with speeds ranging between 4 and 14 metres per second.

The heavy rainfall expected in October will increase soil moisture levels across much of the country. Meteo Rwanda said this will have a positive impact on agricultural activities during the 2027 A agricultural season and will also contribute to an overall increase in water availability.

The agency said soil moisture had declined in some parts of the country in September 2026 due to below-average rainfall during the month. However, soil moisture levels are expected to increase in October as a result of the anticipated rainfall.
Meteo Rwanda reported that rainfall recorded across most parts of the country in September 2026 was below the average normally received during the month.

Of the 44 rainfall monitoring stations used in the analysis, 40 recorded below-average rainfall, while only four recorded rainfall above the normal levels for September.

Rainfall recorded in September ranged from 1.2 to 124.6 millimetres. The highest amount was recorded at Ntendezi in Nyamasheke District, where 124.6 millimetres of rainfall was measured, while the lowest was recorded in Nyamata, Bugesera District, at 1.2 millimetres.

In Kigali City, 38.1 millimetres of rainfall was recorded at Kigali International Airport, while the Gitega monitoring station in Nyarugenge District recorded 47.1 millimetres.

Meteo Rwanda said the low rainfall recorded in September affected land preparation and crop planting activities for the 2027 A agricultural season, as well as livestock farming due to reduced availability of pasture and water.

On the other hand, the rainfall expected in October will help increase soil moisture and water availability, thereby supporting agriculture and livestock farming, particularly crop planting activities.

Meteo Rwanda urged the public to continue following weather updates issued at different intervals, including six-hourly, daily, five-day, seven-day and 10-day forecasts.
