There is worry whether freedom of expression will not be jeopardized when Rwanda inks deal with YouTube authorities to shut some YouTube channels.
Rwanda Investigation Bureau Spokesman, Dr Murangira Thierry in an interview with national television, RTV, confirmed Rwanda is negotiating with YouTube, which may result into shutting down some YouTube channels.
The targeted YouTube channels are those considered to be involved in spreading hate speeches, divisionism and denial of genocide.
” We are already in talk with You Tube to close those channels.” Murangira said
Recently, Rwandan You Tubers like Yvonne Iryamugwiza aka Idamange was sentenced to 15 years in jail, Hakuzimana Abdou Rashid trial is pending and former university lecturer, Aimbale Karasira Uzaramba trial is underway.
Critics say the move by government of Rwanda intends to silence opposition. Rwanda vehemently always denies to do so citing the freedom is even granted by constitution yet has a limit.
